February 14, 2009 - In our first two SEO Keyword articles, we discussed how to determine a website’s SEO Keyword competition as well as combining a website’s content with Meta Tags. Here we’ll explore how to choose the correct SEO Keywords for your website.

Keep in mind that this isn’t necessarily a guide on how to choose specific keywords for specific pages. That would fall into the previous article. Instead, this article will help you what SEO keywords are best suited for your website as a whole.

The first step is to identify which SEO Keywords are being searched for on the search engines. There are many websites that can help you identify the frequency of words being searched. Those sites will also give you similar keywords that are also being searched at a high rate.

For example, let’s say that you had a website about wedding flowers. While the SEO Keyword “wedding flowers” is obviously going to be your main focus, you would also want to use “wedding bouquet”, “bridal flowers” and “flowers for wedding.”

An easy way to achieve high rankings early is to localize your SEO Keywords. For example, if your business is located in Denver, Colorado, then you can use keywords such as “wedding flowers denver.”

Another method used to get high rankings is to use specific keywords, such as “pink wedding flowers” or “white wedding bouquet”. The general rule is that the more specific the keyword is, the less competition you will have to worry about.

Remember, the more content you have on your website, the higher your site will be ranked on the search engines. It’s for this reason that you can expand your keywords include related industries. Using the same example, you can have a page on your website about wedding dresses, where you would include some wedding flower SEO in the content.

It’s ok to use keywords that aren’t exactly what your website is primarily about. The goal is to drive traffic to your website. If someone were to stumble across your website while doing a search for wedding dresses, then they are likely to be in the market for wedding flowers as well.
